What You Will Do:

I. General Summary

Reporting to the Director of Operations, will provide direction, and oversight of the therapy operations of the department at UMMC and Community Center sites. The Manager will oversee and supervise all Radiation Therapists and Radiation Therapy Assistants via Chief Therapist(s) and Assistant Chief Therapists. The Manager ensures the Radiation Therapists and Radiation Therapy Assistants adhere to practice protocols and policies and procedures governing the effective, high quality and compassionate delivery of radiation therapy and imaging services. The Manager will provide technical and clinical guidance and leadership to the Therapists. The Manager coordinates the daily radiation therapy delivery activities of the centers and works with leadership, radiation oncologists and other managers/division leads to deliver high-quality simulation/scanning services, radiation therapy treatments, introduce new technologies, minimize risk to patients and staff, improve efficiency, coordinate dual-modality (proton/photon) among multiple practice locations and ensure compliance within the Department of Radiation Oncology practice guidelines, state and federal regulations.


II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.


1. Provide leadership and oversight for the daily therapy operations of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UMMC Community Center Sites and the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. Provide integrated oversight over the therapy services including: Radiation Therapists and Radiation Therapy Assistants.


2. Assists the Director of Operations and Clinical Director in the development of radiation therapy clinical operations, in compliance with UMMS and departmental goals and objectives.

A. Responsible for the formulation, revision and review of technical policies, guidelines and procedures related to the radiation therapy section. Communicates and enforces policies of UMMS and The Department of Radiation Oncology. Establishes and maintains radiation safety, infection, and environmental control policies and procedures.

B. Evaluates radiation therapy clinical operations to assess levels of support required to meet the needs of the clinics. Revises and updates staffing complement, as required, and transfers resources to address operational needs.

C. Recommend and implement changes to operations, as needed, including but not limited to the expansion of hours and services.

D. Identifies and requisitions resources and medical supplies, as needed.

E. Participates in decisions for new service offerings.

F. Assists and advises in equipment purchases, maintenance and replacement. Participates in planning of major construction/renovation projects to ensure the safe and effective placement of equipment and efficiency of operations.


3. Manages Radiation Oncology department therapy personnel through the Operation Managers, Chief Therapists, Assistant Chief Therapists and Senior Therapists. Assigns responsibility and authority to supervisors as necessary to accomplish delegated tasks.

A. Directs personnel actions including recruiting, new hire actions, interviewing and selection of therapy staff, salary determinations, training and personnel evaluations, in accordance with UMMS standards. Disciplines and terminates as required, subordinate staff in accordance with UMMS and departmental policies.

B. Provides mentorship, technical guidance/expertise to staff supervisors in problem solving, issue resolution, and coordination to promote a collegiality (and technically mediates) between Radiation Therapy staff, the leadership team and other divisions, as needed.

C. Ensures maintenance of departmental performance standards and recommends actions to achieve desired departmental goals.

D. Provides oversight of continuing education initiatives in support of division philosophy to promote growth. Responsible for evaluations and ensuring that required competencies and mandatory training is completed. Responsible for training for system upgrades and usage.

E. Assesses patient satisfaction in areas of responsibility, sets a high standard for staff to improve patient satisfaction.


4. Assists in developing budgets by providing information regarding both operating and capital needs for the radiation therapy section. Maintains and tracks inventory for supplies and materials used by the therapy section.


5. Assists in developing, directing and managing the technical aspects of the departmental quality assurance program by monitoring monthly key aspects of departmental operations.

A. Oversee compliance and data integrity from all sites as it relates to therapy operations.

B. Ensures departmental compliance with requirements of The Joint Commission, the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene through periodic inspections and observance of departmental practices and other regulatory bodies as appropriate. Provides leadership and direction to Radiation Therapists and Radiation Therapy Assistants to ensure adherence to regulations.


6. Assists in the evaluation of new products for improved quality and patient care. Addresses technical concerns.


7. Ensure accurate and complete billing and compliance practices; provide training and oversight for billing as needed.


8. Coordinate, in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Physics, the effective and safe management of the clinical equipment and operations, as well as the planning processes related to equipment replacement.


9. Accountable for ensuring departmental communication associated with radiation therapy staff and radiation therapy operations is maintained.


10. Establish and maintain internal and external relationships that will benefit the departmental mission. Key relationships are necessary, but not limited to vendors, school affiliations, collaborating institutions, and professional organizations.

A. Fosters a close/cooperative working relationship with Clinicians, Clinical Radiation Physics, Dosimetry, Nursing, Front Desk, Research and Administration for optimal provision of radiation therapy treatment services.


11. Performs responsibilities of Radiation Therapists during periods of extreme staff shortage.


12. Participates in departmental sub-committees as required. Attends and actively participates in monthly supervisory/management meetings.


13. Attends and participates in in-service, management and technical training programs both internally and outside of the organization for professional growth and development.

A. Maintains currency with trends and advances in methods of radiation therapy procedures and equipment. Maintains an active membership in relevant professional organizations. Reads health care and radiation therapy-related literature.


14. Collaborates and supports a partnership with the Maryland Regional Radiation Therapy Education Association, in conjunction with the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex to provide clinical experience for students pursuing a career in radiation therapy.

A. Oversee and coordinate radiation therapy student rotations at assigned clinical treatment sites. Provide and evaluate the hands-on aspect of their course work as they interact and prepare patients for treatment, operate treatment computer systems and apply concepts and principles of radiation oncology in adherence to guidelines set forth by the JRCERT accrediting body.


What You Need to Be Successful:

1 .Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiation Therapy Technology or Radiologic Technology is required.


2.A Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation Therapy is required along with 5 years of experience and a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience. An Associate of Science degree in Radiation Therapy Technology with a minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible experience performing Radiation Therapy Supervisory/ Management (3 years supervisory experience required) will be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree.


3.Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required.


4.Licensure by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as a Radiation Therapist is required.
