UMMS is currently seeking a Corporate and Foundation Relations Director for our Corporate location

Under limited supervision, the successful candidate will oversee the effective planning, organization & coordination of the University of Maryland Medical System Foundation’s corporate & foundation fund raising efforts, including all grant writing activities. The incumbent will pursue financial and in-kind support based on identified hospital needs and priorities and in cooperation with appropriate staff and volunteer leadership.
The Director is responsible for maximizing support from corporations and foundations as well as driving efforts on behalf of UMMC and UMMS to secure grants to support clinical programs. He/she is charged with designing and implementing the entire corporate and foundation development program.
The Director is responsible for developing a comprehensive annual plan to increase corporate, foundation and government support for a wide variety of UMMC/UMMS programs and projects. Included in these responsibilities are prospect identification (including research and qualification); prospect clearance; prospect management among and between interested units; project feasibility studies, establishment of appropriate cultivation activities, training of senior faculty, administrators, volunteers and development officers; prospect briefings and fundraising progress reports; solicitation of prospects, and stewardship of donors, including planning appropriate events and managing external gift and grant reports. S/he will also be responsible for tracking the use of funds and reporting necessary information detailing impact of support to donors.
He/She must understand and communicate to a wide variety of internal and external audiences a knowledge of UMMC/UMMS fundraising programs/priorities, gift receipting, grant administration, donor recognition, and UMMC/UMMS accounting rules and processes.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
1. Oversees the development and execution of complex cultivation and solicitation strategies for national and regional foundations, corporations and governmental agencies.
2. Must have extensive knowledge of corporate, foundation and government donors and prospects in order to lead in the development of creative and strategic fundraising strategies so that corporate, foundation and government support to UMMSF is maximized.
3. Maintains an active portfolio of high-level corporate, foundation and government donor and prospects – often among the most important current and potential donors to UMMC/UMMS. He/She is expected to develop highly individualized cultivation strategies to make these donors/prospects aware of programs and projects at UMMC/UMMS. Creates such awareness through cold calls to senior corporate and foundation officers based on prospect research, follow up calls to them based on referrals from faculty and senior level volunteers, e-mail contacts, large and small presentations, publications, letters, prospectuses, and proposals, as well as site visits and field tours. He/she is responsible for producing original and creative strategies and tactics for promoting new and increased gifts UMMC/UMMS.
4. Solicits major gifts directly from senior executives in corporations and foundations, such as board members, CEOs, regional directors, grants managers, and/or senior program officers. Creatively, strategically, and accurately increases breadth and depth of corporate and foundation relationships.
5. Insures that corporate, foundation and government strategies are implemented appropriately, that cultivation steps move forward, and that the solicitation is successful. Responsible for the reporting and stewardship of all corporate and foundation donors and government funded grant supporters.
6. Develops the confidence of faculty and top UMMC/UMMS administrators. Explains and assists with the implementation of UMMS Foundation corporate/foundation clearance process, working with development colleagues at both UMMC and affiliate hospitals closely to steward current gifts or grants and approach funders for additional funds in the future, and encouraging them to work through the UMMS Foundation office.
7. Manages competing interests within UMMC/MMS and helps determine the appropriate program(s) to present to a corporate, government and/or foundation donor. Represent UMMC/UMMS priorities and be presented as a coherent whole.
8. Proactively keeps abreast of extensive and evolving information about the distinctive and often changing interests, guidelines, and processes of pre-identified corporate and government prospects. Responsible for effectively communicating necessary critical information to development colleagues, department chairs, faculty, UMMC/UMMS leadership, and Boards, so that appropriate decisions in the best interest of the UMMC/UMMS can be made about when, how, and even if a foundation, corporate or government prospect/donor should be cultivated and solicited.

1. Bachelor's Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
2. Four (4) years of relevant fundraising experience required.
3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Internet navigation tools required; superb knowledge of Guidestar or similar non-profit reporting tools required.
4. Experience in interacting with the business and local non-profit/foundation communities required.
5. Proven success in securing six-figure grants and corporate gifts.
6. Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills. Proven superior writing and editing skills. Versatility in a range of formats and voices. Ability to cover a wide range of science and medical-related topics.
7. Demonstrated understanding of development, particularly within a medical academic or healthcare setting, and the ability to work within that framework.
